Justification:
This species has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 3,144 km2, and the area of occupancy (AOO) is 36 km2.  It is inferred that the population is declining due to habitat degradation from livestock grazing and burning for the majority of its range.  Based on this, it has been assessed as Vulnerable under Criterion B.
History: -
Geographic Range
Range Description: This species is known from the Eswatini highveld, ranging from near Hlatikhulu to near Bulembu, and from South Africa, it occurs in the Mbombela District in Mpumalanga province.
Countries: Native:
Eswatini; Mpumalanga;
Population
Population: No detailed population surveys have been conducted for this species.  For the purpose of this assessment, it has been assumed that the species still occurs in the locations where it was historically collected as the habitat still exists in these areas.  However, it is inferred that the population is declining due to ongoing habitat degradation from livestock grazing and burning, although its habitat preference for rocky outcrops might protect it to some degree.
Population Trend: Decreasing
Habitat and Ecology
Habitat and Ecology: This species has been found growing on shallow soils amongst rocks, usually on hilltops. The vegetation type for the Eswatini records is KaNgwane Montane Grassland (Gm16), and in South Africa, Legogote Sour Bushveld (SVI9) (Mucina et. al. 2018).
List of Habitats: 4 Grassland
4.7 Grassland - Subtropical/Tropical High Altitude
Threats
Major Threat(s): Within Eswatini, the rocky hilltop areas are subject to heavy livestock grazing and burning causing ongoing habitat degradation.
List of Threats: 2 Agriculture & aquaculture
2.3 Livestock farming & ranching
2.3.2 Small-holder grazing, ranching or farming
Conservation Actions
Conservation Actions: Only one recorded location falls within a formally protected area, namely Malolotja Nature Reserve in Eswatini.  No material has yet been collected for ex-situ conservation of this species.  There is a need for fieldwork to confirm the status of this species in previously recorded localities, and to determine any population trends.
List of Conservation Actions: 3 Species management
3.4 Ex-situ conservation
3.4.2 Genome resource bank
