Description (Compton's Flora of Swaziland*):
Carex cernua - Erect, tufted, 45—60 cm high; basal leaves numerous, flat, 4—6 mm wide, tapering to sharp tip; stem leaves few with sheathing bases, uppermost exceeding inflorescence. Stem sharply angular. Inflorescence consists of three or four erect or nodding female spikes 3—5 cm long >< c 4 mm wide and a single erect terminal male spike; female spike has numerous bracts in the axil of each being a single female flower enclosed in its utricie.
