Description (Compton's Flora of Swaziland*):
Phaulopsis imbricata - Herbaceous, erect, unpleasantly scented, thinly hairy throughout. Leaves opposite, usually one leaf of a pair larger than other, stalk up to 4 cm long, larger blades up to 8 cm long x 5 cm wide, unequal-sided at base. Inflorescences dense, up to 7 cm long X 2 cm diam; bracts broad, overlapping, usually enclosing group of three flowers. Calyx shorter than corolla, deeply cleft, top sepal oval, lower sepals narrow; corolla white, up to 2 cm long, five-lobed, tube cylindrical, somewhat two-lipped, lips spreading apart, upper lip two-lobed, lower three-lobed; stamens four, not protruding, anthers two- chambered; ovary two-chambered, each chamber with two ovules. Fruit dry, flattened, bursting elastically; seeds with hairs becoming mucilaginous when wet.
